Lorna J. Rice '81
Clinical Social Worker, Dove House Inpatient Hospice
In the sense that she has been an active and engaged alumna since graduation, Lorna Rice has never left Gettysburg College. Whether working tirelessly on behalf of other Gettysburgians or taking charge as a quiet but firm leader, she is extremely dedicated and willing to step up whenever asked. She has been part of the Baltimore planning committee and the Gettysburg Alumni Information Network, made countless phonathon calls for annual giving, led reunion committee efforts, and served on the Cupola Society Executive Committee, ending her term as Cupola Society Chairperson in 2010. As a devoted volunteer, passionate about the College, she inspires others to celebrate their connections with each other and their alma mater.
Rice majored in sociology and entered the health care field after graduation, earning her master's in social work from the University of Maryland at Baltimore. Her career encompasses service, administration, instruction, and management in various settings, including hospitals, rehabilitation centers, and specialized care facilities. She holds certificates in aging and thanatology, the academic preparation for end-of-life care. Currently, as clinical social worker at the Dove House Inpatient Hospice at Carroll Hospice in Westminster, Md., she provides support to families and patients and serves on professional advisory and activity committees.
